Iceland Express 2010, 8 days/7 nights

Type of car recommended: Nr. 2 (Compact) and higher

Day 1: Arrival at Keflavik Airport. Transfer on own from Keflavík airport to accommodation in Reykjavík. Recommend that you take scheduled Flybus to city center/hotel.

Day 2: Today's highlights are Pingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall, and Geysir hot-spring area. Then drive onwards along the south shore, viewing Skogafoss waterfall, the black beaches around Vik and Myrdalsjökull glacier.
Optional:
- Snow mobile tour on Myrdalsjökull glacier

Day 3: Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skaftafell National Park, the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón and then onwards to Höfn.
Optional:
- Boat tour on Jökulsárlón
- Glacier hike in Skaftafell area

Day 4: Drive along the rugged varied coastline of the East Fjords with their towering mountains and charming fishing villages. On the way there is an option of taking a boat tour to Papey island where thousands of puffins nest in summer or visit the famous stone collection of Petra at Stödvarfjördur.

- Petra's stone collection

Day 5: Travel across the Mödrudalsöræfi highlands to the waterfall Dettifoss, Tjörnes peninsula and Husavik fishing port.
Optional:
- Whale watching from Husavik

Day 6: Explore highlights of the Lake Myvatn area, including the volcanic formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudocraters at Skutustadir, Námaskard and Krafla volcano. Drive on to Godafoss waterfall to the town of Akureyri or Skagafjördur.

Day 7: Through the historical region of Skagafjördur renowned for horsebreeding. There is the option to visit the old farmstead of Glaumbær. Continue to the bay of Hunafloi and across Holtavörduheidi plateau, returning to Reykjavik in the late afternoon.
Another option is to travel across the barren Kjölurhighlands (4WD needed, track open from mid-June), to the geothermal oasis at Hveravellir and onwards to Reykjavík.

Day 8: Departure on own
