Our self-drive tour will take you into an area of the Norwegian Fjord and Glacier kingdom that is truly unique in scenery and beauty. This area is not easily accessible unless you drive, but the roads are of a high standard and easy to navigate.
This combined with 5 nights in cozy accommodation at select Historic Hotel members will offer you a trip that you will cherish for years to come. The Historic Hotel members are hand picked based on age and size of hotels, standard of rooms, quality of staff, personal service and a kitchen that offer only the very best.
NOTE!! TOUR CAN ALSO BE DONE ROUND-TRIP FROM BERGEN OR ONE-WAY OSLO TO BERGEN OR V.V. HOWEVER, ORDER OF HOTEL STAYS WOULD BE MODIFIED AND REQUIRED FERRY TICKETS AND/OR ONE-WAY CAR RENTAL FEE WOULD BE EXTRA.
Day 1—Pick up your Hertz rental car this morning before departure from Oslo City. You will be driving north via Lillehammer, site of the 1994 Winter Olympics, to the scenic Gudbrandsdal Valley area. In Otta you will head west though the mountains to Grotli.
Overnight at Grotli Hoyfjellshotell. (250 miles).
Day 2—Continue west via beautiful mountain roads, passing Stryn Summer Ski Center. (Yes, skiing is available) Since today is a short drive you can either make a detour to the Geiranger Fjord or the Jostedals Glacier, the largest in northern Europe.
In the afternoon continue to the Nordfjord area and Sandane.
Overnight at charming Gloppen Hotell. (60 miles).
Day 3—Today you will drive south via mountains, fjords, lakes and villages to the Sognefjord, the World’s longest, and along the shore to Balestrand.
Overnight at Kvikne’s Hotel. (95 miles).
(Day 4, Optional side trip to Bergen for 2 nights is possible before going to Walaker Hotel,
see rates under Tour Options).
Day 4 —This morning you will take a short ferry ride, crossing the Fjærlandsfjord from Dragsvik to Hella, buy tickets locally. Once on the other side continue east along Sognefjord to Solvorn. From Solvorn you can take an optional boat to visit the Urnes Stave Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Overnight at cozy Walaker Hotel. (40 miles + ferry).
Day 5—After a good breakfast head northeast to the banks of the Lustrafjord and up over the Jotunheimen Mountain range, also a National Park area and you will find several small glaciers here, along with hiking and amazing scenery. Continue to Lom.
Overnight at Fossheim Turisthotel. The hotel is famous for its rustic charm and a team of excellent chefs. (65 miles).
Day 6 —After a good nights sleep time to drive back to Oslo.
You will return on same road you started on so if you missed some sights now you will have some time. (220 miles).
