Departures every Friday, Jun 2 - Sep 22 2017

This 9-day escorted tour of Iceland and Greenland gives you an extended look at Greenland’s culture and landscape, and Iceland’s geothermal power. First, enjoy a taste of Iceland’s most amazing geothermal experiences: a thorough city tour of the capital Reykjavik, a tour of the famous Golden Circle, and the greenhouse village of Hveragerði! Next experience Ilulissat, a Greenlandic town on the edge of the world: hike to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, discover the home of one of the most famous Scandinavian explorers of all time, cruise in front of a 3-mile wide glacier, and linger over a beautifully pristine Arctic wilderness you’ll call home for nearly a week. Top it all off with a relaxing trip to the Blue Lagoon hot spring spa in Iceland!

Day 01: Arrive Reykjavik

Arrive at Keflavik Airport for the start of your Iceland and Greenland tour, meet your guide, and take a private transfer* together to your upscale city-center Reykjavik hotel to check in and overnight.

Hotel Reykjavik Centrum
*NOTE: If there is time, we will pass through the Krýsuvík region, a geothermal area on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Day 02: Reykjavik - Reykjavik City Tour

After breakfast this morning you’ll depart the hotel with your group on a city sightseeing tour of Reykjavik and the nearby town of Hafnarfjordur: discover the local Fish Market, open-air museum Arbær, an outdoor swimming pool and the magnificent Hallgrimskirka (Hallgrim’s Church), as well as the old town, harbor, and Parliament buildings.

The afternoon is free to explore this fascinating harbor city on your own! Return to your hotel for overnight.

Hotel Reykjavik Centrum

Day 03: Reykjavik - Golden Circle Tour

Enjoy another great Icelandic breakfast this morning before embarking on the quintessential tour of Iceland’s surrounding landscape: the famous Golden Circle Tour. We’ll pick you up at your hotel and drop you off in the evening after you experience these powerful sights for yourself.

Gullfoss Waterfall

An iconic 230-foot waterfall fed by Langjökull Glacier, Gullfoss Waterfall crisscrosses the river Hvítá and gushes down a series of rock facades toward the base of a narrow canyon. You can get right up close to the falls, walking safely along the canyon’s side and then stepping out along a wide stone outcrop to peek over the edge.

Geysir hot springs

This gorgeous hot spring area contains many different spouts—Geysir (after which all other geysers in the world were named; the verb ‘geysa’ is an Icelandic word descended from Old Norse that means ‘to gush’), Strokkur (‘the churn’), Blesi (‘blaze’, often used as a horse’s name), Fata, Konungshver (‘the royal spring’, or ‘the king’s hot spring’), Seidir, Litli-Geysir, Oþerrishola, Þykkuhverir, Smidur (‘the smith’), and Sodi among others. Explore the area and witness Strokkur’s famous bubble rise just before it erupts!

Thingvellir National Park

This was once the site of the world’s oldest Parliament—known as Iceland’s Alþingi or Althing (‘all-thing’, a general assembly)—which was moved to Reykjavik in 1881. Ceremonial meetings are occasionally held at Thingvellir for various reasons, the last occurring in 2000. The park itself is a stunning visual reminder of what makes Iceland’s landscape so unique, with an additional surprise: two tectonic plates—the North American and the Eurasian—collide on land in the park, a phenomenon that occurs almost nowhere else on Earth, and it offers up fascinating diving opportunities.

Afterward, make a special visit to Hveragerði – known as the greenhouse village due to its location directly on top of a geothermal hot spring field – and then return to Reykjavik for a special dinner at Restaurant Reykjavik, where you’ll get the chance to sample the Big Icelandic Fish Buffet!

Overnight at your hotel.

Day 04: Reykjavik - Ilulissat - Ilulissat City Tour

Breakfast is at your hotel before you enjoy a leisurely morning. Around midday, transfer from the hotel to the airport and fly from Reykjavik to Ilulissat, Greenland—the name of which means ‘iceberg’ in the Inuit language—the 3rd-largest city in the country. Meet your guide, and transfer together to your hotel for check in.

Ilulissat overlooks the Disko Bay region and its massive floating icebergs, and lies approximately 217 miles (350 km) above the Arctic Circle. The UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed Ilulissat Icefjord (also spelled Eisfjord) sits just outside the borders of town, its glacier calving into the bay periodically to create icebergs so large they dwarf visiting boats. It’s also home to a variety of wildlife, including humpback and fin whales, and 3,500 sled dogs. You’ll experience the breathtaking scenery and culture as you tour the city with your group!

Enjoy a welcome dinner tonight at your local four-star hotel.

Hotel Arctic

Day 05: Ilulissat - Hike to Sermermiut

Enjoy your first Greenlandic breakfast at your hotel this morning before departing on a gorgeous hike through Sermermiut Valley, accessible only by driving outside of Ilulissat to the edge of the Icefjord. Discover Greenland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site with stunning panoramic views of flora, massive icebergs, and visible traces of three distinct Inuit cultures: the Saqqaq, Dorset, and Thule people – the latter of which are the direct descendants of today’s Greenlanders. Light refreshments will be served during the hike.

Return to your hotel this evening for dinner and overnight.

Hotel Arctic

Day 06: Ilulissat

Enjoy another breakfast in Greenland this morning before you relax or explore the city on a free day in Ilulissat. There are many fascinating landmarks to see, including the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen’s house—now a national museum containing a vast array of materials and articles from Rasmussen’s expeditions around Greenland.

Return to your hotel in Ilulissat this evening for dinner.

Hotel Arctic

Day 07: Ilulissat - Eqi Glacier Calving Tour

Enjoy breakfast on your final day in Greenland before embarking on a fascinating, 7-hour excursion to the Eqi Glacier and the Inuit settlement of Ataa—a former trading station positioned on an island across the bay from the glacier.

Sail slowly past Eqi’s massive 3-mile-wide profile for more than an hour to see if you and your fellow travelers can catch a glimpse of glacier calving—an event which causes chunks of glacial ice to separate suddenly from the main glacier and become the icebergs you see floating all around you. Enjoy a two-course lunch and a glass of wine at the Inuit settlement of Ataa.

Return to your hotel in Ilulissat this evening for dinner and overnight.

Hotel Arctic

Day 08: Ilulissat - Reykjavik

Breakfast today and one last coffee with your guide at the hotel before you head to the airport for your afternoon flight back to Iceland. Arrive in Reykjavik in the evening, where you’ll be provided with a private transfer from the airport to your city-center hotel.

Hotel Reykjavik Centrum

Day 09: Blue Lagoon - Depart Reykjavik

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel today before checkout. Today you’ll transfer to the Blue Lagoon via Flybus from your hotel (included), and then enjoy a dip in the world’s most famous geothermal spa! Surround yourself in the outstanding luxury of the Blue Lagoon’s aqua-colored waters, averaging a comfortable 38°C (100°F) and available year-round.
