SMALL GROUP TOUR: Journey to the northernmost point of mainland Europe, the North Cape, on this 20-person max tour and encounter the unique Scandinavian landscape of northern Norway: a region bursting with cultural heritage and natural beauty. Tour the Lofoten Islands’ rocky archipelago—with soaring mountainscapes rising straight out of the sea—and the bustling cultural centers of Tromsø, Alta, and Hammerfest on your way to the top of the world!

Day 01: Arrive Bodø

Arrive in Bodø today and transfer on your own to your hotel for check in. Today is free to explore the Bodø area, a magnificent contrast of quaint Arctic Norwegian town and distant craggy peaks rising from waters that host the world’s strongest tidal currents. The interplay of wilderness and man-made structures are a serene mixture, neither encroaching on the other.

Tour the town’s park, small specialist shops, and surrounding nature independently for a time before meeting with your small group and tour leader in the evening.

Accommodations tonight are in Bodø.

Thon Hotel Nordlys

Day 02: Bodø - Lofoten Islands - Svolvær

We’ll depart Bodø today after a filling breakfast and start our tour of northern Norway by taking a ferry across the Vestfjord to the Lofoten Islands, an archipelago with an unusually mild weather pattern. Mountains soar straight into the air from the ocean, and numerous colorful fishing villages perch at their feet.

We’ll visit the now-famous Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg, a remarkable reconstruction of a Viking chieftain’s longhouse believed to have been established in the area near the year 500 A.D. The original longhouse was uncovered by archaeologists in 1938, and excavations from 1986-1989 revealed the largest Viking-era building ever found in Norway. The museum, opened in 1995, was built slightly north of the original site and includes a full reconstruction of the original longhouse, a blacksmith’s forge, and two ships with their boathouses.

After our tour of the Viking museum, we’ll travel to the picturesque Nusfjord fishing village—a lush, serene escape settled at the base of the archipelago’s craggy heights. In the late afternoon, we’ll travel back to Svolvær.

Accommodations tonight are at four-star hotel in the heart of Svolvær.

Thon Hotel Lofoten or similar

Day 03: Svolvær - Lofoten Islands - Harstad

Wake to the sun rising over the soaring mountains and sea, and enjoy a delicious Scandinavian breakfast at your hotel. Afterward, you’ll have the option to embark on a breathtaking boat tour of the narrow Trollfjord—surrounded by mountain walls reaching well over 3,000 feet into the air (not included). Magnificent Norwegian sea eagles inhabit the region, and we’ll keep a sharp eye out in the hopes of spotting the large winged predator.

In the afternoon, we’ll continue our journey by driving toward Harstad, a charming city comprised entirely of islands with white sand beaches. Culture-rich and scenic, it’s considered the entrance to both the Lofoten Islands and the Vesterålen archipelago, and it’s here that we’ll stay tonight.

Accommodations tonight are at a three-star hotel situated by the mouth of the harbor.

Thon Hotel Harstad

Day 04: Harstad - Tromsø

After breakfast today, we’ll travel from Harstad to one of the northernmost cities in the world and home to Norway’s famous Arctic Cathedral: Tromsø! As an alternative to the coach transfer, you will have the opportunity to take a short Hurtigruten cruise through breathtaking landscapes all the way from Harstad to Tromsø (not included).

Known as a prime location for viewing the Northern Lights, Tromsø rests about 217 miles above the Arctic Circle and is the largest urban area in northern Norway. It is also one of the warmest at its latitude due to the Gulf Stream. The afternoon is free to take an independent tour in Tromsø or explore the city on your own.

Overnight tonight in a modern three-star hotel located in downtown Tromsø.

Clarion Hotel The Edge

Day 05: Tromsø - Alta

Following today’s breakfast we’ll cross two of Norway’s northern fjords and arrive in the town of Alta. This extraordinary city covers a lot of history: there are 7,000-year-old petroglyphs residing here—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and the city was home to the 1980s Sámi court case relating to the nearby Sámi town of Máze (Northern Sámi; Norwegian: ‘Masi’).

We’ll visit the Alta Museum when we arrive, a historical museum located about three miles from the city center and very close to the largest of five open-air petroglyph sites in the region.

Overnight tonight is at a contemporary three-star hotel located in Alta’s town center.

Thon Hotel Alta

Day 06: Alta - Honningsvåg

Breakfast is at your hotel this morning before we embark on the last leg of our trip by travelling to Norway’s northernmost city, Honningsvåg. Upon reaching Honningsvåg, you’ll have time to explore the largest city near the edge of the North Cape.

After dinner tonight (included), we’ll travel towards the North Cape and drink in the sight of the midnight sun hovering over the Arctic Ocean while enjoying a glass of champagne. Each guest will receive a North Cape certificate.

Return to Honningsvåg tonight and enjoy accommodations at a local three-star hotel.

Scandic Honningsvåg or similar

Day 07: Honningsvåg - Hammerfest - Alta

Today after breakfast we travel back toward Alta by way of Hammerfest, one of the northernmost towns in the world and the gateway to the Barents Sea. We’ll stop at the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society, a small museum dedicated to both the town’s history and its heraldic crest.

Overnight tonight is once again at a contemporary three-star hotel located in Alta’s town center.

Thon Hotel Alta

Day 08: Depart Alta

After breakfast this morning, travel to the airport on your own and depart Alta.
