The Northern Lights swirl in ever-intricate patterns above the expansive Abisko National Park—far north of the Arctic Circle—the site of the famous Aurora Sky Station. This all-inclusive vacation* to Swedish Lapland is an exclusive one-of-a-kind journey you won’t find anywhere else, with traditional fika and Northern Lights snowmobile safaris, husky sledding, and a chance to see the breathtaking Northern Lights from one of the most coveted spots in the world! *Excludes international flight.
Day 01: Arrive Kiruna - Kangos
Today we transport you from Kiruna Airport to your hotel via minibus. Enjoy the beautiful winter scenery along the way: you’ll pass near Jukkasjärvi—home to the world-famous ICEHOTEL—through wide open fields, wilderness, and old mining towns, many of which were settled in the early 17th century but existed much earlier, as this entire region is Sámi territory.
Arrive at your hotel and check in to your superior room, tastefully decorated in a warm and cozy Scandinavian style, with a modern fully-tiled en suite bathroom. Your building is a short 2-minute walk from the main lodge, where meals are served and you’re close to the local activities. Dinner tonight is at the hotel’s main lodge. Don’t forget to search the skies on your way back to your room for the magnificent Northern Lights!
Day 02: Kangos - Husky Safari with Traditional Fika - Northern Lights Snowmobile Safari by Sled
Wake in Swedish Lapland to a wonderland of white, where trees are completely hidden underneath fluffy cotton ball-shaped snow patches, and—on a fair day—the clear sky enables you to see for miles. Breakfast this morning is at the hotel’s main lodge.
You’ll have some free time today either before or after the day’s first excursion: a husky safari with the added treat of the traditional Swedish fika! Zip along the trail in the Lappish wilderness as you ride behind a team of huskies pulling their sled, and take in the magical scenery. A stop is included along the way to enjoy fika, the traditional Swedish pastime of coffee, cake, and taking a break for the purpose of slowing down and savoring the moment. Return to the hotel after the tour. Lunch is provided at the hotel.
In the evening hours, enjoy dinner at the hotel’s main lodge before you set out on a Northern Lights snowmobile safari through Swedish Lapland. You’ll hunt the skies for signs of the aurora for 2 hours while relaxing in a sled pulled by a snowmobile, taking a fika break around a warm fire to enjoy more coffee and cake.
Return to your hotel after the tour for overnight.
Day 03: Kangos - Snowshoe Safari with Traditional Fika - Private Northern Lights Spa
Your final day in Kangos sees you enjoying another Swedish breakfast before heading out on a 2-hour snowshoeing tour of the Lappish wilderness. This short hike introduces you to beautiful scenery well within Sámi territory at a slower pace than by snowmobile or dogsled. Wearing snowshoes means you can walk on deeper snow, so there’s more to explore! Return to the hotel at the end of the tour, where lunch is provided.
Tonight after dinner, you’ll enjoy a private spa—with outdoor hot tub and traditional sauna for as long as you like—underneath the Northern Lights! Sightings of the Northern Lights are never guaranteed, but above the Arctic Circle in the countryside this phenomenon frequently brightens the night sky with its beauty from early October to late March. Chances are very good that you will be able to see the Northern Lights on multiple nights during your journey.
Day 04: Kangos - Jukkasjärvi ICEHOTEL Tour (Entrance Opt.) - Björkliden
Following breakfast this morning, check out of your hotel. This morning you’ll be transported via minibus to the world-famous Jukkasjärvi ICEHOTEL, this year celebrating its 28th year of snow and ice and its first year as a year-round art accommodation (ICEHOTEL 365). Once you arrive, you’ll be able to purchase a ticket locally (roughly SEK 300/$35 USD) for a tour of the magnificent rooms—which include suites, a chapel, and the ICEBAR—and see what this year’s talented artists have constructed.
After the tour, we provide a private transfer for you to your next destination: Björkliden, a short 15-minute drive from the stunning landscape of Abisko National Park. Lunch is provided at the hotel. Settle in to your gorgeous room, complete with en suite bathroom and breathtaking views of the Swedish countryside. The rest of the day is free, and dinner tonight is at the hotel.
Day 05: Björkliden - Abisko National Park - Aurora Sky Station
Enjoy breakfast today in Björkliden and a free day to explore the area on your own. Björkliden overlooks a stunning lake near Abisko called Torneträsk (träsk is the local word for ‘lake’), and there are several other scenic spots you may wish to visit in your free time. The first is Rissajaure (also called Trollsjön), a lake about 20 minutes’ drive from Björkliden, and it has the distinction of being the clearest, purest lake in all of Sweden with a visual depth of 34 meters (roughly 112 feet), right down to the bottom! A second scenic spot, the waterfall Silverfallet, is within 20 minutes’ walking distance and frozen over in winter—a beautiful tumbling of petrified, blue-tinged ice covered in pure white snow. Lunch is at your hotel this afternoon.
Tonight at we transfer you about 15 minutes from your hotel via minibus to Abisko National Park for the exquisite zenith of this tour: a view of the Northern Lights from the famous Aurora Sky Station! You’ll begin at the bottom of the mountain, climbing aboard a chair lift for an open-air ride up to the station at the top of the mountain. Your eyes gradually get used to the darkness, and you can enjoy both the stars and the magic of the Northern Lights.
It is recommended that you upgrade (pre-book only) to the Exclusive Dinner available at the Sky Station: this exceptional four-course meal influenced by Nordic cuisine is followed by a guided tour of the station, the Northern Lights and how to spot them. (Departure for the Exclusive Dinner is at 5:15 PM. If you choose not to upgrade to the Exclusive Dinner, dinner is provided before the tour at your hotel, and you depart for the Sky Station at 8:15 PM.) Return to your hotel via minibus* after the tour is over.
*Choose from one of three return times: 10:45 PM, 12:15 AM, or 1 AM.
