Daily Departures April 01-September 30, 2019

This short Golden Circle self-drive tour through southern Iceland brings you to some of the most memorable places in the tiny country: a geothermal village, puffin colony, three of its most famous waterfalls, the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcanic region, and the one-time meeting place of the most ancient parliament on Earth. Many more spectacular sights await!

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival Iceland (Keflavik) - Hveragerði

Today you’ll arrive at Keflavik Airport, pick up your rental car, and begin your tour of Iceland by driving along the southern coast of the Reykjanes peninsula toward Hveragerði. If you have time, you can take a short detour and visit the famous Blue Lagoon, where geothermal waters soothe your muscle aches and skin.

One of the world’s few locations set directly on top of a geothermal regions, Hveragerði is filled with greenhouses heated by hot spring water, and is often referred to as the ‘Flower Village’. You’ll stay here overnight.

Day 02: Seljalandsfoss Waterfall - Skógafoss Waterfall - Dyrhólaey Puffin Colony - Vík

This morning you’ll begin by traveling to and visiting Seljalandsfoss Waterfall and Skógafoss Waterfall, two of Iceland’s most incredibly picturesque landmarks. At Seljalandsfoss, you can walk behind the thundering roar of the waterfall’s cascading stream. At Skógafoss—rival to Gullfoss Waterfall as Iceland’s most famous, and one of the biggest in the country at a drop of 200 feet—you can get right up close to the former sea cliffs of Iceland.

Next, explore the area surrounding Eyjafjallajökull, both the name of a small glacial ice cap and one of the most notoriously active volcano calderas of recent years. The 2010 series of eruptions caused the largest disruption in air travel since World War II and lasted from March to May with an official end declared in October.

Dyrhólaey, today’s final site, is a fantastic archway near the Vík region on which thousands of sea birds and puffins nest during the summer months. Tonight you’ll stay in the Vík area.

Day 03: Þjórsárdalur Valley - Gullfoss Waterfall - Geysir Hot Springs

This morning drive to the Þjórsárdalur Valley region, a beautiful landscape with multiple waterfalls—like the stunning Háifoss Waterfall—and sandy lava fields, birch woods and rivers, all perched below the dramatic and highly active Hekla volcano.

Move on to the famous Golden Circle region, which you’ll spend the remainder of today and part of the morning tomorrow exploring. Begin by stopping at Gullfoss Waterfall—the ‘Golden Falls’—Iceland’s most famous set of cascading, staircase-like falls. Next, travel onwards to the Geysir hot spring area, Haukadalur, where geothermal energy regularly causes the eruption of both Geysir and Strokkur (‘the churn’).

You’ll overnight in the Golden Circle region.

Day 04: Thingvellir National Park - Borgarfjörður - Reykholt - Reykjavik

Today’s morning highlight is Þingvellir National Park, one of the jewels of the Icelandic landscape. The former site of the Icelandic parliament for over 800 years, this beautiful expanse is one of the only places on Earth where two tectonic plates—the North American and Eurasian Plates—collide on land.

Travel next through either Hvalfjörður or Kaldidalur toward the Borgarfjörður region and Reykholt, a green mountainous region and the one-time home of famous 13th-century poet and politician Snorri Sturluson.

Drive back to Reykjavik for your last night in the city.

Day 05: Depart Reykjavik

After your final morning in Reykjavik, end your Golden Circle self-drive tour by driving back to Keflavik International Airport—with an optional Blue Lagoon visit on your way to the airport if you didn’t have the time on the first day—and then depart for home.
