Wednesday Departures from Reykjavik, Iceland
Guaranteed Departures June 5 – August 21, 2019

Known both for their incredible nature and legendary Viking history, the remote landscapes of Iceland and Greenland are the focus of this unique 8-day journey. We travel from Reykjavik to Narsarsuaq, both with a strong Viking presence, and experience the isolated beauty of the Arctic north. Explore the famous Golden Circle tour of Iceland, choose from optional visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites tucked into the glacial icebergs of Greenland’s southern fjords, and meet with the people who call the Arctic Circle home!

Day 01: Arrive Reykjavik

You arrive in Reykjavik today at Keflavik Airport and are transferred by Flybus to your city-center hotel. The rest of today is at your leisure to relax and do some exploring on your own. Overnight in Reykjavik – dinner is on your own tonight.

Hotel Reykjavik Centrum

Day 02: Reykjavik – Reykjavik City Tour

Breakfast is at your hotel. This morning you’ll experience the city of Reykjavik up close on a city sightseeing tour! The tour includes the town of Hafnarfjordur, where we visit the Fish Market, the open air museum Arbær, one of the outdoor swimming pools and the towering Hallgrimskirkja Church. We also pass through the old town, the harbour, the summit-meeting house Höfdi, and the House of Parliament.

The afternoon and evening are at leisure in Reykjavik.

Day 03: Reykjavik – Golden Circle Tour

Enjoy breakfast again this morning at your hotel. Today’s excursion is one of the most popular day trips in Iceland: the Golden Circle! We’ll experience the majestic waterfall at Gullfoss, the erupting hot springs at Geysir, the national park of Thingvellir and the greenhouse village of Hveragerdi. We transfer you to and from your hotel.

Gullfoss Waterfall

An iconic 230-foot waterfall fed by Langjökull Glacier, Gullfoss Waterfall crisscrosses the river Hvítá and gushes down a series of rock facades toward the base of a narrow canyon. You can get right up close to the falls, walking safely along the canyon’s side and then stepping out along a wide stone outcrop to peek over the edge.

Geysir hot springs

This gorgeous hot spring area contains many different spouts—Geysir (after which all other geysers in the world were named; the verb ‘geysa’ is an Icelandic word descended from Old Norse that means ‘to gush’), Strokkur (‘the churn’), Blesi (‘blaze’, often used as a horse’s name), Fata, Konungshver (‘the royal spring’, or ‘the king’s hot spring’), Seidir, Litli-Geysir, Oþerrishola, Þykkuhverir, Smidur (‘the smith’), and Sodi among others. Explore the area and witness Strokkur’s famous bubble rise just before it erupts!

Thingvellir National Park

This was once the site of the world’s oldest Parliament—known as Iceland’s Alþingi or Althing (‘all-thing’, a general assembly)—which was moved to Reykjavik in 1881. Ceremonial meetings are occasionally held at Thingvellir for various reasons, the last occurring in 2000. The park itself is a stunning visual reminder of what makes Iceland’s landscape so unique, with an additional surprise: two tectonic plates—the North American and the Eurasian—collide on land in the park, a phenomenon that occurs almost nowhere else on Earth, and it offers up fascinating diving opportunities.

Arrive back at your hotel after the three Golden Circle stops. Tonight a buffet dinner is included at Restaurant Reykjavik, where you can look forward to sampling the Big Icelandic Fish Buffet! Overnight and prepare for the next big adventure the following day: flying to Narsarsuaq, Greenland.

Overnight at your hotel.

Hotel Reykjavik Centrum

Day 04: Reykjavik – Narsarsuaq

Breakfast is at your hotel. A taxi transfer from your hotel to the airport is included, where you take a midday flight with Air Iceland from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Narsarsuaq. Here you’ll have a short meet-and-greet with the local guide.

Transfer together to your hotel for check-in and a short information meeting with your guide. Enjoy a 2-course dinner and overnight at your hotel, located near the airport and overlooking a branch of the stunning Tunulliarfikfjord.

Hotel Narsarsuaq

Day 05: Narsarsuaq

Enjoy your first Greenlandic breakfast at your hotel, and then start the day with a guided walk around the small settlement (included). Narsarsuaq is a unique and spectacular region in southern Greenland, and there are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of the small settlement or nearby icefjord’s beauty.

Today you’ll have the option to cross Eriksfjord (also known by its Greenlandic name, the Tunulliarfikfjord) by boat and go ashore on a guided excursion at the sheep breeding settlement Qassiarsuk, situated on the very spot (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) where Erik the Red settled in 985 AD and named his farm ‘Brattahlið’. We visit the ruins of Erik’s farm and Thorhildur’s church – what is considered to be the first Christian church on the American continent. Travel back across Eriksfjord to your hotel in Narsarsuaq; dinner is on your own.

Hotel Narsarsuaq
NOTE: While we have taken the liberty to suggest some of the best, there are many excursions available in Narsarsuaq from which you may choose. Please contact us for the full list of excursions; please note that all excursions must be booked in advance.

Day 06: Narsarsuaq

Breakfast is served today at your hotel before you enjoy another full free day in Narsarsuaq. Today, we suggest the full-day excursion to and from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Igaliku: travel by boat through the Eriksfjord to nearby Itilleq, where you walk from the dock with your guide to Igaliku. A village nestled in the stunning Greenlandic fjord system where the ruins of the Vikings’ Cathedral and the Bishop’s Farm are situated, present-day Igaliku was founded in 1783 and remains one of the most remote yet accessible areas in south Greenland.

After lunch (included in the excursion), walk back through the village with your guide to Itilleq and then take the boat back to Narsarsuaq. A 3-course dinner is served tonight followed by your final night in Greenland.

Hotel Narsarsuaq
NOTE: Hike from Itilleq to Igaliku is approx. 1.8 mi (3 km), one-way on Greenlandic terrain, and level of personal fitness should be taken into account when booking this excursion. Alternatively, you may want to choose an excursion better suited to minimal activity, such as the Qooroq Ice Fjord excursion, in which we cruise before the calving glacier and its stunning field of icebergs (see end of itinerary for price). While we have taken the liberty to suggest some of the best, there are many excursions available in Narsarsuaq from which you may choose. Please contact us for the full list of excursions; please note that all excursions must be booked in advance.

Day 07: Narsarsuaq – Reykjavik

Enjoy breakfast and a final coffee with your guide at the hotel before you’re transferred to the airport for your afternoon flight back to Iceland.

Arrive in Reykjavik this evening, where we transfer you from the domestic airport to your city-center hotel. Your final evening and dinner are on your own.
