Icehotel in Northern Sweden
Open December 14, 2018-April 14, 2019
or All Year Long (ICEHOTEL 365)
About Sweden’s ICEHOTEL
ICEHOTEL is the world’s first, largest hotel built of snow and ice situated in Jukkasjärvi—a small village in northern Sweden with 1,100 residents and 1,000 dogs. This ephemeral and constantly evolving work of art offers five different categories of rooms, ranging from the standard to the spectacular luxury suites. One of the most popular rooms is the Ice Room, double or family rooms decorated with furniture made of ice and snow.
For 27 years, ICEHOTEL has risen from the nearby River Torne as the ultimate form of artistic expression and design. More than just a series of rooms and beds, this international art project is a truly unique accommodation, and we’ve created several ICEHOTEL tour packages to showcase highlights of this remote location! The ICEHOTEL is open from mid-December through early April.
Now you can experience the world-famous ICEHOTEL year-round with a permanent ice exhibit, which includes an ice bar, ice gallery, 9 luxury suites (each complete with their own sauna and bathroom), and 11 art suites that change form each year in the same way as the classic ICEHOTEL. The entire complex will be run simply and sustainably, using snow and ice from the Torne River and solar cell energy powered by the midnight sun in the summer. It will be the largest permanent art exhibit north of Stockholm in Sweden!
OPTION 1: The Extended ICEHOTEL Tour
Day 01: Arrive Kiruna – Jukkasjärvi ICEHOTEL
Arrive today at Kiruna Airport, where you’ll be transferred directly to the ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi. Check in for your two-night stay at the hotel upon your arrival, and then enjoy some free time to roam the hotel. You can take pictures of the beautiful sculptures and creations designed by handpicked international artists, or take the 45-minute optional tour—which gives you insight into the artists’ concepts for the suites as well as the building process.
We can make optional reservations for you to enjoy dinner tonight in the ICEHOTEL restaurant (please request upon booking). The restaurant serves up local, must-try delicacies such as moose and reindeer served on exclusive plates made from pure, crystal-clear Torne River ice.
Tonight you’ll spend the night in the ICEHOTEL’s Ice Room, with ice décor and a bedframe made of ice. Arm yourself with woolly socks, reindeer skins, and expedition sleeping bags (all included), and you’ll sleep in comfortable warmth through the night!

Day 02: Jukkasjärvi ICEHOTEL – Ice Sculpting – Reindeer Camp and Sámi Cultural Experience – Northern Lights Snowmobile Excursion
In the morning, you’ll be woken up in bed with hot lingonberry juice and a trip to the sauna for the ultimate relaxing experience. After breakfast, you’ll experience an incredible day of adventure!
Ice Sculpting Class
An activity that typically takes guests by surprise in its creativity—and is often one of the most appreciated, due to the fantastic settings—the ice sculpting class at ICEHOTEL is a fascinating introduction to the process that births the famous accommodations you stayed in on Day 01.
The class will be held in the morning for 2-3 hours, and begins with your instructor giving you a short introduction to the tools used to work on the ice. Shortly thereafter, you’ll be introduced to your very own block of crystalline River Torne ice.
Enjoy lunch on your own, served in the ICEHOTEL restaurant starting at 11:30 AM, before you move on to the excursions below.
Reindeer Camp and Sámi Cultural Experience
Join a Sámi guide as they lead you to a local reindeer camp! Spend 3 hours (2-5 PM) on this Sámi cultural experience: try a reindeer sled ride around a short track and hand-feed curious reindeer calves, and then enjoy a hot coffee and suovas—the Sámi national dish—in front of a roaring fire inside the traditional Sámi tent. All transfers are included.
Upon returning to the ICEHOTEL, check into the ICEHOTEL’s warm accommodations—known as the Kaamos Rooms—and rest up a little before the day’s final adventure.
Northern Lights Snowmobile Tour
One of the most popular tours at the ICEHOTEL, the Northern Lights snowmobile tour showcases cascading green, red, and purple lights which dance across the starry winter sky in vivid display. For the best chance at seeing this phenomenon, you and your guide will head out after dark into the untouched wilderness on snowmobiles!
During the course of the 4-hour tour (7-11 PM), the guide will make short stops to communicate both fact and fiction about the mythical natural phenomenon. Midway through the tour you’ll stop at a wilderness camp, where you’ll gather with the guide around a roaring fire for a cup of hot lingonberry juice and a hearty 3-course dinner.
Head back to the ICEHOTEL and spend the night in your warm accommodations, the Kaamos Rooms.
