After breakfast at the hotel, you head through the greenhouse village of Hveragerði to reach the Golden Circle natural wonders of Gullfoss (the ‘Golden Waterfall') and the nearby Geysir hot spring area. You’ll see the famous Geysir and Strokkur as well as numerous other hot springs and boiling mud pools. You continue to drive along the south coast, stopping at both Seljalandsfoss Waterfall and Skógarfoss Waterfall. Continue eastwards to Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve, closed during the nesting period (5/15 - 6/25), a solitary cliff with interesting formations and teeming bird life.

You arrive in Vik and enjoy dinner and overnight.

Icelandair Hotel Vik or Hotel Kria

Day 03: Vik - Skaftafell National Park - Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon - Höfn

Today after breakfast at your hotel you will continue along Iceland’s Ring Road and cross Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on earth in historical time, before reaching the small historic village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The tour continues over Skeiðarársandur, vast tracts of black sandy desert washed down by torrential glacial rivers.

Continue on to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon where huge icebergs float and grind together in the still waters. Throughout the day we are afforded magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier, Europe’s largest. We journey on to our destination, the seacoast village of Höfn. Dinner is on your own tonight: Höfn has several very good restaurants and is known for its langoustine seafood!

Hotel Höfn

Day 04: Höfn - East Fjords - Egilsstaðir

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Today you’ll enjoy amazing scenery as you head from glacial landscapes to fjord views. Drive from Höfn over the Almannaskarð pass to Lónsöræfi, a mountainous wilderness ringed by extinct volcanos. We’ll make a stop here to admire the stunning coastline. Towering mountains, their bare rock faces ridged by nature, plunge vertically into the sea to form Austfirðir, Iceland’s magnificent East Fjords. From here we travel through coastal fjord villages to the Egilsstaðir area for dinner and overnight.

Icelandair Hotel Hérað

Day 05: Egilsstadir - Lake Mývatn

After a good breakfast the tour continues. Explore the vastness of the highland desert plateau Möðrudalsöræfi, heading to the Lake Mývatn area. On the way stop at Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, and visit Námaskarð Pass with its boiling mud pools and vibrant colors.

Explore the natural beauty of the Lake Mývatn area, the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir and Laxa Salmon River. One of Mývatn area’s claims to fame is that it is home to more species of ducks than any other place on Earth, with very diverse bird life in general.

Overnight and dinner in the Mývatn area.

Sel Hotel Mývatn

Day 06: Lake Mývatn - Akureyri - Siglufjordur

After breakfast today you explore the peculiar lava formations at nearby Dimmuborgir before heading towards the northern capital of Akureyri. On the way, we’ll make a stop at Goðafoss Waterfall – the famed “Waterfall of the Gods” – as well as the old turf farm Laufás, now a museum. Due to its excellent natural harbor and good accessibility, Akureyri has become the northern center of education, culture, trade and industry.

After spending some time in Akureyri, continue along the coastal roads of Eyjafjorður and the Troll Peninsula. This is a beautiful drive along steep mountains with amazing views over the Arctic Sea and black sand coastline. The destination is Siglufjörður, set in a beautiful fjord of the same name. This town has some of the finest timber buildings in the country, beautifully restored to their original glory. Siglufjördur is a very enjoyable and friendly town for an evening stroll.

Dinner and overnight in Siglufjördur.

Sigló Hotel

Day 07: Siglufjörður - Skagafjörður - Borgarfjörður - Borgarnes

Enjoy breakfast this morning at your hotel in Siglufjörður before continuing the tour. This morning visit Siglufjörður’s award-winning Herring-Era Museum. The museum recreates the atmosphere of the early 20th century, when Siglufjörður was transformed into a herring boom town, thanks to a large migration of herring. From here we head along majestic mountains and narrow passes to the historical town of Hofsos, with its beautiful views over the ocean, where we stop to rest and take in the sea.

The road from Hofsos leads us to Skagafjörður, considered to be one of the finest places in Iceland for historical preservation and horse breeding. Stop at Holar, one of Iceland’s most historical places. It was the cultural center of Iceland for over 700 years and has several fascinating ancient buildings on site. Today it is home to a world-famous agricultural university. This afternoon you’ll visit a local horse farm for an enjoyable introduction to the unique Icelandic horse breed with its special fifth gait - the tölt. Afterwards continue towards the village of Blönduós, built on both sides of the Blanda River. Hrútey Island – a protected nature reserve – is situated in the center of this popular salmon river.

Cross the Holtavörðuheiði Plateau through Borgarfjörður to reach the beautiful town of Borgarnes. Overnight and dinner in the Borgarnes area.

Icelandair Hotel Hamar

Day 08: Borgarnes - Thingvellir National Park - Reykjavik

Breakfast at your hotel before embarking on a drive to Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in the world. Stop to admire the beautiful Hraunfossar Waterfall before continuing via the Hvalfjörður to Lake Thingvallavatn, Iceland's largest lake, and Thingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world's first parliament held outdoors. It is also the place where the North American and European tectonic plates meet.

In the afternoon you’ll arrive back in Reykjavik and check in to your four star hotel before enjoying a short ‘farewell’ city sightseeing tour. You are transferred back to your hotel, and your final dinner in Iceland is on your own this evening.
