Type of car recommended: Nr. 2.0 (Compact) and higher.

Day 01: Arrive Reykjavik – Hveragerði

Arrive at Keflavik Airport, where you’ll pick up your rental car and start your self-drive tour of Iceland by traveling along the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula towards Hveragerði: one of the few sites in the world located directly above a geothermal region. An abundance of greenhouses watered from nearby hot springs have earned this town the nickname of ‘the flower village’.

Stay overnight at a hotel in Hveragerði.

Hotel Ork or similar (62 miles)

Day 02: Hveragerði – Þingvellir National Park – Geysir – Gullfoss Waterfall – Flúdir

Breakfast is included this morning at your hotel before you continue the journey. Drive to Pingvellir National Park, where the ancient Icelandic parliament met on the shores of Lake Þingvallavatn, then continue to the famous Geysir hot spring area and Gullfoss Waterfall.

Travel to Flúdir and enjoy a stay overnight at a local hotel.

Flúdir area (106 miles)

Day 03: Flúdir – Skógafoss Waterfall – Mýrdalsjökull Glacier – Vík – Dyrhólaey – Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Breakfast is at your hotel this morning. Continue to travel along the south shore, stopping in picturesque locations such as Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Skógafoss Waterfall, Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, the cliffs of Dyrhólaey* which house a large puffing colony, and the Reynisfjara black sand beach near Vík. Make your way toward Kirkjubæjarklaustur, a picturesque fishing village and former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent.

Tonight you’ll enjoy a stay in a local Kirkjubæjarklaustur hotel.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur area (186 miles)

NOTE: *Dyrhólaey is closed nesting season, mid-May through June 23rd.

Day 04: Skaftafell National Park – Jökulsarlon Glacial Lagoon – Höfn

After breakfast at your hotel, drive this morning to the beautiful Skaftafell National Park: an awe-inspiring region located between two dramatic glaciers, it’s a prime hiking spot. Further along, you’ll be able to stop and explore the Jökulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, where hundreds of icebergs break away from the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier (part of the larger Vatnajökull Glacier) and float within the confines of a natural harbor.

Drive to nearby Höfn, a beautiful harbor town known as the lobster capital of northern Europe. Accommodations tonight are in Höfn.

Höfn area (124 miles)

Day 05: Höfn – Egilsstaðir

Today after breakfast leave Höfn behind. Drive through Iceland’s East Fjords, a region of mountains and fishing villages, to reach Egilsstaðir. From here, you can choose an optional tour of the famous Petra stone collection (Stöðvarfjörður) or a boat tour of Papey Island: thousands of puffins nest here in the summer.

Overnight in a local hotel at Egilsstaðir.

Egilsstaðir area (186 miles)

Day 06: Egilsstaðir – Dettifoss – Jökulsárgljúfur National Park – Ásbyrgi Canyon – Húsavík – Lake Mývatn

Breakfast is at your hotel this morning before you leave the Egilsstaðir area. Drive across the Möðrudalsöræfi highlands to Dettifoss Waterfall, the most powerful in Europe, and then move on to Ásbyrgi Canyon within Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. This horseshoe-shaped canyon is home to a local Norse legend: it’s said that Sleipnir, the Norse god Odin’s eight-legged horse, left a hoof print embedded in the ground in passing.

Move on to Húsavík, a fishing port located in the far north of Iceland. Accommodations tonight are at a local hotel in the Lake Mývatn region.

Mývatn area (193 miles)

Day 07: Mývatn – Akureyri – Siglufjordur

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel this morning. Discover the highlights of the Lake Mývatn and surrounding areas today: Dimmuborgir–incredible lava formations with the appearance of a crumbling, ancient citadel–the pseudocraters at Skútustaðir, the colorful sulfurous slopes of Námaskarð, and the Krafla volcanic region.

Drive to the town of Akureyri, known as the capital of north Iceland, and stop on the way to admire Goðafoss Waterfall–the ‘Waterfall of the Gods’. Afterward, continue to the Siglufjordur area along one of Iceland’s most stunning coastlines and enjoy the beautiful view of the North Atlantic.

Overnight is in the Siglufjordur region.

Siglufjordur area (112 miles)

Drive the numerous uninhabited fjords of Ísafjarðardjúp, its beautiful coastline teeming with seals and bird life.

Continue to Ísafjörður, the largest town in the area, where you will stay in a local hotel for the night.

Discover Borgarfjörður, visiting the beautiful Hraunfossar Waterfall and Barnafoss Waterfall, Reykholt–home of the famous Middle Age poet and politician Snorri Sturluson–and the most powerful hotspring in Europe, Deildartunguhver.

Continue via the Hvalfjörður to Reykjavik, where you’ll stay your final night in Iceland.
