The port town of Kirkenes is at one end of the world-famous Classic Hurtigruten Cruise, a perfect tour to pair if you’re looking to sail the coast of Norway. You’ll get the chance to experience one night on a Hurtigruten Cruise ship, hunt the Northern Lights, sample a delicious King Crab, join a husky safari, feed wild reindeer at an authentic Sámi camp, and overnight at the fantastic SnowHotel Kirkenes. You can also choose from numerous optional excursions, which can help you discover ice fishing, snow shoeing, and the Northern Lights by husky sled!
Day 01: Arrive Kirkenes
Today, arrive at the Kirkenes airport from Oslo airport (air is on your own, or you can call us for a quote). Transfer to your hotel is included.
Check in at your four star hotel and relax. At 9:00PM you will leave on a 2-hour “Hunting for the Northern Light” tour by snowmobile (included). There’s also an optional 2-hour excursion, Northern Light Tour by Husky, possible with a 9:00PM departure (add $26 per person and advise when booking).

Day 02: Kirkenes – King Crab Safari
Breakfast is at the hotel this morning. Today you’ll have the opportunity to experience a spectacular excursion—a King Crab Safari!
Take a short transfer to a local fisherman’s home, where you’ll be provided with protective clothing before heading out in a sledge pulled by a snowmobile. Once at your destination, you’ll help cut the ice and pull up the trap—full of some of the largest and freshest King Crabs in the world! Enjoy superb King Crab for lunch, followed by the return snowmobile ride and a final quick transfer to your hotel.
Thon Hotel Kirkenes
Day 03: SnowHotel Kirkenes
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel this morning before you experience Kirkenes on your own for the day. Optional tours in the area that are available for booking include:
- 3-hour Ice Fishing with a Local Expert, $257
- 2-hour Snow Shoe Walk with Local Expert, $155
- 2-hour Northern Light Hunt By Bus, $128
At 6:00PM, transfer from your hotel to the SnowHotel Kirkenes. A welcome drink will be served in the SnowBar, followed by check-in to your room. Later, you’ll enjoy a 3-course dinner by a roaring fire. The restaurant is situated near the reindeer park—why not say good-night to them before heading to your room?
Day 04: Kirkenes – Hurtigruten Cruise
This morning after a delicious Scandinavian buffet breakfast at the SnowHotel Kirkenes, you’ll check out and have a little free time to seek out lunch as well as explore the city before you embark on your Hurtigruten Cruise ship.
The ship will depart upon the southbound half of her voyage. Crossing Varangerfjord, Norway’s only east-facing fjord and a fabled bird-watching site, you’ll arrive in Vardø, the easternmost point of the country. Next the ship will round the Varanger Peninsula, where archaeologists excavated a community believed to date from 9,000 BC. In the evening, the ship calls at Båtsfjord, which also boasts the remains of a Stone Age settlement, and Berlevåg. Keep an eye open for Tanahorn Mountain, which long ago was a Sámi sacrifice site.
Overnight aboard the ship in your cabin.
Day 05: Hurtigruten Cruise – Tromsø
Wake to a sprawling buffet breakfast aboard your ship. The Hurtigruten Cruise ship arrives at Honningsvåg in the early morning. After calling at Havøysund, she will stop for 1.5 hours in Hammerfest, the world’s most northerly town. Despite its remote location, it was the first Norwegian town to have electric street lighting and its own power station. The ship then heads south to Øksfjord, whose glacier calves directly into the sea. Dinner is included on the ship tonight.
After crossing open water, the ship calls at the old trading post of Skjervoy. You’ll dock in nearby Tromsø, followed by private transfer and check into your hotel late tonight.

Day 06: Tromsø – Sámi Reindeer Excursion
Today after breakfast you’ll have an entirely free day to experience Tromsø. The iconic Arctic Cathedral holds court in the middle of this urban city nearly 225 miles above the Arctic Circle, and though the weather may be cold this time of year, it’s usually milder here than in other Arctic locations due to the Gulf Stream.
Tonight, you’ll be picked up around 6 PM at the nearby Radisson Blu Tromsø Hotel (a 1-minute walk from your hotel) and transferred to an area outside the city limits. Here you’ll experience something few people in the world get to: the chance to spend an evening feeding the reindeer at a Sámi camp, along with a traditional Sámi dinner underneath the Northern Lights! For about 5 hours you’ll walk the reindeer camp: feed the wild reindeer, gather at the main lavvu (a temporary Sámi dwelling similar to a Native American tipi) for a traditional three-course dinner and joik (Sámi storytelling and song), and search for the Northern Lights outside. A transfer is included back to your hotel after the excursion ends.
Overnight at your hotel.
Clarion Aurora Hotel
NOTE: While prevalent during the winter season, sightings of the Northern Lights are not guaranteed. If the night is clear, however, there is a very good chance of seeing them.
Day 07: Tromsø – Husky Safari
Enjoy a filling Scandinavian breakfast, after which you’ll again be picked up at the nearby Radisson Blu Tromsø Hotel and transfer to a local husky farm to meet over 350 huskies and their puppies! Learn the age-old northern Norwegian tradition of driving a husky team, sharing the experience with a passenger while your guide—a professional musher—drives ahead of you. Tour includes a hot lunch: bidos (reindeer) stew (vegetarian options are available). After your return, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel.
In the afternoon, you’ll again be able to tour Tromsø independently—this time on your last day in Norway. In addition to the Arctic Cathedral, there’s a host of other sites to see: the Polaria (an Arctic aquarium right on the waterfront), Fjellheisen—an aerial tramway that takes you to the top of Storsteinen Mountain—as well as a range of museums like The Polar Museum, dedicated to scientific, cultural, and archaeological exhibits.
Evening buffet (hot meal with vegetable and salad options) and overnight in your hotel.

The large panoramic window and lounge chairs covered with sheepskin will ensure you a very comfortable time while looking at the Northern Lights from the warmth of your modern cabin. The huts are also equipped with a kettle and breakfast/dinner are served in our restaurant, which is nearly next door. Reindeer are on also present on the grounds—make sure you say hello!
